This phenomenon challenges the traditional understanding of life and poses the question: can inorganic materials be considered as life forms if they can respond to external stimuli?This project aims to inspire a new perception of non-living substances, and contribute to an ongoing philosophical debate on the nature of life and the relationship between the animate and the inanimate. It employs a digital-analog generative system that allows luminous powders and the sonic landscape to evolve together, freeing matter from its passive role. The sound is composed around the sonic textures collected from the material utilising a granulator and generative algorithm, directing the powders to move. Meanwhile, a live image recognition program employs particle behaviours to modulate the sound. Each element performs in response to the changes of the other, giving rise to a complex and dynamic system that challenges conventional notions of causality and interactivity. This piece features a live moving image and a unique quadraphonic system where the four sound channels are splitted into a quad of transducers and monitor speakers. Through the immersive audiovisual experience, viewers are enveloped in a sonic haze that blurs the boundary between their individuality and the surrounding spatio-temporal structure. It aims to convey a sense of the infinite and eternal, where the self dissolves, merging with the external world. Freud interpreted this "oceanic feeling" as a primitive self-awareness retained from infancy. Oceanosmos creates an immersive space using spatial sound, laser planes, projections, smoke, and water interaction to explore this "oceanic feeling" – a spiritual experience where the self and the world become one.Oceanosmos employs an Ambisonic multi-channel spatial sound array, weaving sounds from the ocean and within the human body to create a generative immersive sonic landscape. The work processes sound samples recorded from underwater microphones and portable recorders using chaotic algorithms, resulting in a generative soundscape that hovers between the concrete and the abstract. Through the cues provided by generative sound, Oceanosmos aims to construct a world that exists between the deep sea and the womb, enveloping the audience completely. It encourages the audience to explore the blurred boundary between the external and the self. The visual installation takes shape in multiple womb-like glass sculptures, constantly modulating the laser projection. Programmed mechanisms create ripples on the water's surface, using refracted lasers to produce different visual patterns. Sound coordinates with programmed projections and lasers to deliver an experimental cross-media narrative. Through immersive nonlinear storytelling, the work guides the audience to explore the relationship between the internal and external, dissolving the boundaries of the self and establishing continuity with the surrounding space. Material Topology is a dome-based audiovisual short film that explores materiality at different scales. It magnifies the subtle changes in the microcosmic world within an immersive space, prompting the audience to contemplate the similarities and chaotic patterns among entities of various dimensions.Inspired by topology's geometry, it reveals how seemingly different objects may possess identical structures, and a mutual mapping exists between micro and macro scales.The image of the work uses a high-definition macro camera to capture and magnify the dynamic variations of fluorescent powder particles influenced by sound vibrations, projected onto a giant dome. Within the encompassing dome environment, even the tiniest material changes are highlighted, evoking awe and imagination.Simultaneously, the sound experience combined with the changes in vision travels through the entire auditorium, leading the audience to immerse themselves in a world full of chaotic particles. Here, the scale of human beings is minimised, as if merging with matter, feeling the dramatic contrast between the microcosm and the macrocosm. Obligated to live within the standardised time system has become a common struggle. How could one ever equal ten seconds of delights to ten seconds of suffering? Henri Bergson addresses this problem with the idea of duration (durée), which focuses on the overlooked experiential dimension of time. He describes the form of time as “a bottomless, bankless river, which flows without assignable force in a direction which could not be defined.” Driven by chaotic algorithms, Time-flux presents a dynamic sculpture that captures the fluid and chaotic form of time. The time-bending sound collage recreates the distortion and non-linearity of human’s time perception.Time-flux is an existential anthem to the overlooked experiential dimension of time beyond mechanical measurements. It is also a call for humans to look at time in another way and rethink our relationship with it. It achieves this by blending immersive performances and experiential sculptures. The project recognizes the scientific community's use of soundscapes to monitor ocean health. Healthy coral reefs provide shelter for underwater species, while bleached and dead reefs lack nutrition and consequently lose their characteristic soundscape. These disappearing soundscapes, akin to fossils, exist only in our memories. Drawing from empirical evidence, the project uses audio recordings from British marine biologists' research in Indonesia's Sulawesi. Employing Python programming, it translates acoustic data into visuals. The deliberate choice of 3D ceramic printing mimics the gradual layering process of fossil formation, with a unique dynamic emerging from collaboration between the artist and the printing machine. Each layer combines precise data translation with manual adjustments, resulting in sculptures that are distinctive and irreplaceable. The ultimate presentation comprises experiential sculptures, each of which carries its own elegy. These digital monuments transport audiences to the Indonesian ocean while symbolizing grief and remembrance. Each sculpture signifies the passage of time and the vulnerability of once-thriving acoustic ecosystems. The Dance Theatre of Listening immerses spectators in an ethereal underwater world. Dancers, equipped with wearable mini speakers, gracefully move among the sculptures and the audience, evoking a stark contrast between the thriving coral reef soundscape and the reality of its decline. Through digital media and immersive performance, Epoch infuses tension and vividness into its sculptures. It employs a multi-sensory approach to recreate the vanishing coral reef soundscape, aiming to deeply engage the audience and foster an emotional connection with the consequences of climate change. This installation collects and monitors micro-current data from plants, converting it into electronic music in real time. Simultaneously, the plant's signals control LED lights and infusion devices for real-time nutrient distribution, thereby influencing the plant's micro-current patterns over longer cycles, resulting in a feedback loop.Data-farm draws plants as a medium to explore the essence of “life” in the world of dataism: the object of data extraction and the subject of passive consumption. Data is extracted from individuals in various ways and is recognised and deciphered by higher-dimensional data machines. Data processing organises computations that allocate refined "personalised content" back to individuals for consumption, thereby exerting a profound influence on individuals over longer time scales. This pattern is prevalent in human society, especially online environments, by monitoring people's behaviours and preferences to create information bubbles, is a prime example. We may be like "cultivated plants or livestock" in a data farm. Through the use of unconventional and unsettling visual and auditory elements, 'Data Farm' serves as a thought-provoking commentary on the dystopian aspects of the data-driven world we inhabit today, with the intention of prompting the audience to cultivate a heightened awareness of the pervasive reality of the 'data farm' in our everyday lives. It features a generative environment that combines an extensive sound database representing personal experiences with a chaotic neural and energy network, collectively influencing the emergence of new consciousness.Through its interconnected synthesizers and patch cords, Sonic Bodies creates a generative sound patch that visually resembles an electronic embryo. This generative sound amalgamates an intimate collection of field recordings and found sounds, transforming them into an inexhaustible flow of a soundscape. Over time, it evolves through various stages including re-synthesis, spatiallisation, overwriting, feedback, fragmentation, and dissolution. The installation proposes that non-living things can act as agents or forces with their own propensities, thereby expanding our understanding of their capacity.The installation consists of a contact microphone attached to a spherical balloon that collects sound from the material. Simultaneously, a speaker located below plays back the collected sound, creating a mesmerizing feedback loop when people interact with it. The vibration from the speaker influences the powder to shift into complex and unpredictable forms, which are magnified by a live camera and projection in real-time.By immersing viewers in this unique microcosm of interfered matter, the installation prompts them to reconsider their impact on other bodies and appreciate the impersonal life that surrounds and permeates us. Roland describes the first body as a narcissistic entity that becomes absorbed in the immersive medium, while the second one fetishizes its surroundings. In this sonic experience, the audience is invited to encounter and immerse themselves in their “sonic self” and all its sonic affordances; Through a series of interactions, they will be led on a journey across the boundary between the two bodies, ultimately engaging in an introspective conversation with themselves.Etymologically, immersion describes a deep mental involvement. However, with the advancement of digital technology and its corresponding jargon, people’s perception of immersion seems to have fixated on the ways in which digitality, particularly on a grander scale, moulds immersion rather than one’s actual feeling within that given environment. In the vein of Roland’s deconstruction of the immersive experience in cinema, this project seeks to dismantle this newly formed associations of digitalisation and immersiveness, and engage the audience in a discussion about the essential constituents of immersion.This work comprises a spatial composition that emerges from an interplay between the audience, the stage light, the shadow, and the mono sound system. The soundscape and lighting are intricately intertwined with the intuitive movements of each individual in the space, creating a sonification of their presence. The constant visual feedback of the shadow stimulates a dialogic engagement with the self, empowering the audience to play an active role in shaping their experience. In this way, the work encourages an embodied exploration of the interconnection between the audience and the space, foregrounding the role of the individual in shaping this immersive encounter.
