Mirroring humans’ emotional fluctuations and uncertainty in intimate relationships, ‘Decoder’ utilises various AI tools to present a breakup letter with a flux of audio-visual compositions that morph between the poles of clarity and ambiguity. It is an attempt to decode intimacy through the lens of machine precision, inviting viewers to ponder the nuances of their communicative methods and the consequential impacts on their partners.

Relationship dynamics suggest that intimacy is an intricate interplay of behaviours, communication patterns, and emotional exchanges, deeply influenced by interactions between partners. In this intimate connection, information exchange is a continually evolving entity shaped by the unique personalities, backgrounds, and emotional needs of the partners involved, rather than a stable process that can always be logically assessed. This fluidity often obscures the authenticity of expressions, affected at times by the sway of emotions, leading to a scenario where expression and comprehension are perpetually misaligned, breeding conflict.

In response to this fluctuation, ‘Decoder’ uses AI, whose models are trained on a diverse array of human interactions, to reinterpret the emotional nuances in a breakup letter. The content is expressed by a real-time audio variational autoencoder and enriched with moving images generated from textual prompts, creating a dreamcore-like ambiance that guides the audience through the fragmented recollections of the narrative.

‘Decoder’ is an endeavour to acknowledge and reflect upon the complexities and subtleties of human relationships and communication in a technologically mediated world. We seek to illuminate the interplay between human emotion and AI interpretation, pose questions about the nature of understanding within intimate bonds, and provide a deeper understanding of the forces that shape our closest connections.
